Symptoms/Side Effects of Rifampin
BEFORE TAKING THIS DRUG, INFORM YOUR PROVIDER IF YOU:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a history of liver disease/impairment
- Consume alcohol
- Take oral contraceptives
- Are taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner)
- Wear soft contact lenses
- Are taking any medications which may affect rifampin or the drug taken.
It is important to take this medication as instructed. Do not miss any doses. Ask your provider if you have any questions.
INFORMATION ABOUT RIFAMPIN:
- May cause a reddish coloration of urine, sweat, sputum and tears. (Soft contact lenses may be permanently stained.)
- May decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives. A back-up method is advised while taking rifampin and for remainder of the affected pack.
- Take rifampin either one hour before or two hours after a meal with a full glass of water.
- Avoid alcohol
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS (usually tolerable and self-limiting):
- Rash
- Itching
- Gastrointestinal
- Cramps
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Lack of appetite
- Liver abnormalities
- Yellow skin
- Brown urine
- Pale stool
- Flushing
- Swelling
- Headache
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Inability to concentrate
- Behavioral changes
- Flu like symptoms/muscle aches
- Menstrual irregularities
- Kidney problems
- Blood disorders – bruising easily
